Gold Standard Whey Protein Review

Gold Standard Whey Protein Review

It’s not called Gold Standard whey for nothing. Optimum Nutrition’s most popular offering in the bodybuilding world packs a whopping 24g of whey protein isolates in each serving.

[wp-review] I’ve been using Gold Standard whey for several years now. I originally chose it because it regularly won awards from the top bodybuilding websites and I stayed with it because it tastes good, comes at a good price and most importantly it gets the job done.

Plenty or Flavors, Plenty of Taste

Although this whey comes in 12 mouth watering flavors I have to admit that my favorite is double rich chocolate. Add it to your oats in the morning or bang it in a protein shake with a banana after your training session, it’s just like drinking chocolate milk. I’ve never found there to be any bitter after-taste and its a pleasure to drink whether you mix it with water or milk.

If chocolate isn’t your thing then why not try caramel toffee fudge, strawberry banana, cookies and cream or tropical punch.

Ingredients

Made from dairy bi-products,  each scoop of this protein powder contains Whey Protein Isolates (WPI) which are the purest form of whey protein that currently on the market. Along with your 24g of protein you’ll get 5.5 grams of BCAAs (Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine) and another 4 grams of Glutamine and Glutamic acid to boost muscle growth and recovery.

You may want to avoid this type of protein powder and take a casein based product if you are allergic to dairy or soy products. The label also mentions that it may contain gluten, eggs, peanuts and other types of nuts as well which are well known allergens.

The main ingredients in Gold Standard whey include whey protein isolate from milk, Soya Lecithin as an emulsifier, whey protein concentrate and Hydrolyzed whey protein isolate.

In the case of the double rich chocolate flavor a fat reduced cocoa powder is added as one of the flavorings.

Other ingredients include sweeteners (Acesulfame K & Sucralose) as well as enzyme complex (Amylase, Protease, Cellulase, Beta-D-Galactosidase and Lipase).

The Cost

Buying online seems to be the way to go if you want the best savings although I’m sure that you can pick it up in local stores as well. A 5 pound bucket will set you back around $60 (just under £50 in the UK) including delivery and provide around 74 servings.

The Good Points

  • Tastes Good
  • Easy to mix
  • Not too expensive
  • High protein concentration
  • Added BCAA’s and Glutamine

The Bad Points

  • Not the cheapest whey on the market
  • Not Organic

Why I Recommend Gold Standard Whey

ON Gold Standard whey powder may not be the cheapest protein powder on the market but if you buy cheap you get cheap and with this offering from Optimum Nutrition you’re getting a high quality mix at a good price.

It may not be an organic product produced from grass-fed cows living in some beautiful pasture somewhere but where it counts in the nutrition department you get what you need to feed your muscles and put on lean muscle.

Although it comes in a variety of flavors you may find some too exotic so try a smaller container first until you find one that matches your pallet. Personally I prefer to stick with the simple chocolate flavor as it goes with everything and can even be added to home made protein bars.
